I wanted good coffee away from my kitchen, and I couldn’t find anything packable. The pour over drippers I looked at, including the popular Hario ones, are already 3D: solid cones that don’t fold flat, so they take up real space in a bag.
So we made one that does. The Simplecivet Foldable Stainless Steel Pour Over Coffee Filter is a stainless steel frame that opens up over the top of any cup and holds a standard paper filter. When you’re done, it folds flat for compact storage. Rinse it, dry it, and it’s ready for your desk, a hotel room or a campsite. You supply the paper filters, which are cheap and sold at supermarkets and Daiso.
That’s the idea behind a portable stainless steel coffee filter: a reusable pour over frame that packs down small enough to live in your bag, so good coffee isn’t limited to your kitchen counter. This guide covers how it works, where it’s most useful in Singapore, how to brew with it, and which paper filters to pair it with.
What is a portable stainless steel coffee filter?
It’s a foldable pour over frame, also called a dripper, made from stainless steel. It sits on top of your mug and holds a paper filter. You add ground coffee, pour hot water over it, and the coffee drips through the paper into your cup. The frame is reusable, while the paper filter is single-use. When you’re done, bin the paper, rinse the frame, dry it and fold it flat.
Simplecivet’s Foldable Stainless Steel Pour Over Coffee Filter is $18.90 on its own (paper filters not included), and it’s also in the Coffee Lover Starter Pack, paired with a lightweight enamel mug and a taupe cotton pouch.

Three places it earns its spot in your bag
At your desk. A kettle, a mug, a paper filter and your grounds are all you need. A fold-flat frame turns a corner of the office into a coffee break you control, without paying cafe prices every day.
On a trip. Hotel rooms usually have a kettle and not much else. Pack your frame, a few paper filters and a small bag of grounds, and your first morning away starts the way you like it. It slots easily into a bag like our Detachable Sling Weekender Bag, alongside your toiletries. Our guide to choosing a weekender bag covers how to pack it all.
Outdoors. At a campsite, a beach or a park picnic, a fold-flat frame weighs next to nothing and does the job as long as you have paper filters, hot water and a mug. That’s where the enamel mug in the starter pack comes in.
How to brew pour over coffee with a portable filter
- Set up. Open the frame over your mug and place a cone paper filter inside. [confirm filter size]
- Rinse the paper. Pour a little hot water through the filter to remove any papery taste and warm the mug, then discard that water.
- Measure. Use about 16 g of coffee for 250 ml of water, a ratio of roughly 1:16. Adjust to taste.
- Grind medium to medium-fine. Paper filters catch fine particles, so you can grind a little finer than you would for a metal filter.
- Heat the water. Bring it to a boil, then let it rest for 30 to 60 seconds so it’s just off the boil.
- Bloom. Pour just enough water to wet all the grounds, then wait 30 to 45 seconds.
- Pour slowly in small circles until you reach your target amount. The whole brew should take about two to three minutes.
- Lift the frame off, bin the used filter, rinse the frame and enjoy.
Tip: if your cup tastes bitter, grind a little coarser or pour a bit faster. If it tastes weak or sour, grind slightly finer or pour more slowly.
Which paper filters do you need?
This frame holds a cone-shaped paper filter, which you buy separately. Supermarkets and Daiso stock them, so they’re cheap and easy to find, and you can keep a few in your bag. Paper filters aren’t included with the frame.
- A cleaner cup. Paper traps fine particles, so you get a bright, clean cup with almost no sediment.
- Easy cleanup. Lift out the used filter with the grounds, bin it, then rinse the frame.
- Easy to find. There’s no special order to make when you run out.
- The trade-off. Paper filters are a recurring cost, and used filters are waste, unlike a mesh filter that you wash and reuse.
One more point: cafestol and kahweol, natural compounds in coffee oil, have been linked to higher LDL cholesterol, and paper filters trap most of them. If you’re watching your cholesterol, paper filtering is a reasonable choice, and it’s worth asking your doctor.
Why a fold-flat dripper suits Singapore
- It packs flat. Bag space is precious on a commute, and a fold-flat frame takes almost none.
- Refills are easy. Paper filters are sold at supermarkets and Daiso.
- It’s easy to clean. Rinse the frame after each brew. It’s dishwasher safe.
- Humidity means keeping things dry. Let the frame dry completely before folding it away, and keep spare paper filters somewhere dry. Our guide to stopping mould and smell in your bag explains why.
